Community Schools Newsletter

Staff Shout Out! Sonia, our amazing cafeteria lead shared that her team earned another grade A after extensive district kitchen inspections! Her team shows up everyday with a smile and works extensively with attention to detail to provide our kiddos and staff delicious and colorful food. This inspection wasn’t an easy one but Ms. Sonia and her team always work hard to ensure their kitchen standards and food are exceptional for our Chavez family, even going as far to hand pick lettuce so only the most fresh pieces are served in the salad bar! Thank you ladies for the amazing efforts you put in everyday, you are so appreciated and we are all so happy to have you part of the team!

  • Book Fair: Ms. Xenia is passing the torch this year with the help of a few amazing parent volunteers. Community Schools is going to be putting together the book fair this year & is actively recruiting parent & staff volunteers to help support this amazing school wide event! If you would be open to help with this in any way, even for a short amount of time, please let me know! This is going to be a big event and details on schedule will be dependent on availability of volunteers. Please reach out to families if they are interested in supporting this! I will be sending out fliers to help spread the word about event details and volunteer recruitment to help in this process.

Free Event at Kempton Elementary

Community Schools has partnered with VOAD to help distribute food, dry goods, hygiene items and more at back to school night and have also previously distributed similar items to all community members of Chavez. They are hosting a flood recovery event where they will have “DJ, Free Raffle, Free Food, Free Haircuts” and distribute clothes, food, personal items and more! It’s recommended for community members who attend to bring a shopping bag(s) or carts of some sort to take what they need. I will also be sharing this information on the school bulletin board at the front of campus and sharing via Class Dojo. Please keep in mind that this will be held at Kempton Elementary School located in Spring Valley but is still an amazing opportunity for families if they have access to attend!

Coffee & Community! I’m working with local businesses for donations and also accessing the recently SGT approved budget for parent engagement funds to host a Community Schools engagement event tentatively on Oct. 18th! Once donations are confirmed by partners, I will be sharing more about food details, as of now coffee & light breakfast will be provided. I plan on providing information about Community Schools, sharing examples of impact, answering questions & sharing opportunities for involvement. Doors will open for staff to access this information & get some breakfast treats at 7:15 am, then a family engagement session and focus group will be held at 8am. I will be sending out official fliers and details once donations and scheduling have been confirmed.

  • UCSD & United Way are offering a science club starting officially on Wednesday, Oct. 23rd after school to our first cohort of students in grades K-2 from 12:20-1:20 pm every Wednesday for four weeks. The second cohort will be for grades 3-5 at the same time and begin right after on the same schedule.

    • Parent/ staff volunteers are appreciated to assist in ensuring students go to the correct room after school, take attendance once there and also in student pick-up/ sign out after the program. I’m designing a flier that will be shared out to teachers to get this information out to families with sign up information as space is limited to 28 students per cohort on a first come, first serve basis.

    • Sign up sheets will be available in the front office Monday and I will also be sending out the link, however the pdf is much more user friendly if filled out in person. I will also be distributing fliers to promote the opportunity early next week as UCSD has confirmed with me just today of this event details.

  • Volunteers needed for the listed upcoming events and more in the near future! In an effort to plan ahead, organize and allow for these events to take place, Community Schools are reaching out to parent and staff volunteers! If you know of parents who are or if you are available for any amount of time, please let me know! There are many opportunities on the horizon and Community Schools would love your participation in any/ all of these resources to support our families.
